We all know the general travel hacks – roll your clothes for more space when packing; take an empty, refillable water bottle to the airport so that you don’t have to buy bottled water; use ATMs for local cash instead of a bureau de change.

Here are five lesser-known hacks from our travel ninja to make your travelling experience a breeze:

Go incognito

No, we don’t mean invest in a disguise. What we mean is that when you book flights, turn on private browsing (open an incognito window). That way you sidestep the cookies on your favourite travel websites and will likely find cheaper prices on, for example flights you have booked before, or even just searched for.

A hotel TV is a friend

Forgot your phone or laptop charger? Have a look at the hotel TV. Most modern TVs have a USB port and you can charge your equipment from there.

Use the cloud

Email yourself a scan of your passport, visa and other travel documents. This will be a lifesaver if anything is lost or stolen.

Google Maps on the go

Our phones have become so handy, for just about anything, including getting around in a place we don’t know well. Running Google Maps can use a lot of battery, however, so download maps from the app before you hit the road. It will save you battery juice.

Skip the neck pain, and the anxiety

Download the Flight Board app and get the departure and arrival boards for any airport in the world. No more craning your neck, or losing that great seat at the departure gate to double-check your flight details.
